About us

The mission of the Independent Travel Toolkit (ITT) is to promote independence training for young people and increase the use of public transport and sustainable transport within the county of Suffolk.

The ITT has been designed by the Passenger Transport Team within the Growth, Highways and Infrastructure directorate of Suffolk County Council. We have been assisted by colleagues from the Essex County Council Suffolk Travel Training team, Suffolk County Council Children’s and Young People Services, representatives from the Suffolk Parent Carer Forum, and students and staff from Suffolk New College Rural. We would like to thank them for their efforts.

The ITT objectives:

Promoting safe independent travel of young people in Suffolk.
Encouraging more people to use public transport. This might include journeys to school or college, to work, medical appointments, shopping, meeting friends and to help reduce social isolation. Journeys could include bus, train, walking, cycling or rural transport.
Young people in Suffolk told Suffolk County Council they were nervous about going to new places on their own, and that having independence is important to them. They said they needed help to get to new places and help with travel. This ITT has been designed with this in mind to support young people and their parents and carers.

During August, children aged 5-15 can travel by bus for free
