Behaviour on public transport
Your young person’s safety and the safety of other passengers and road users is important. Behaviour on public transport and when out and about is key. Below you will find simple things to think about to ensure safe journeys.
Patience and respect
Waiting at the bus stop / train station
-
Wait in line in a calm and orderly manner.
-
Signal to the driver as the bus approaches so the driver knows to stop.
-
Stand back from the platform edge.
Boarding a bus / train
-
Wait for other passengers to leave first before boarding.
-
Don’t push or shove.
-
Wait for the bus/train to stop.
Where to sit
-
Face the direction of travel.
-
If possible, sit the door side of the bus to see better.
CCTV
-
Some buses and trains do have CCTV which monitors the behaviour of passengers. This can be used as evidence if required and passed to schools or the Police.
Riding the transport
-
Respect staff and other passengers.
-
Pick up your litter.
-
Keep feet off seats.
-
Keep music so only you can hear it.
-
If standing hold the poles provided.
-
Wait for the bus to stop before moving.
-
Give up priority seating to those that need it.
-
Keep bags off seats to allow space for others.
-
Only talk to the driver when they are stopped at a designated stop so they are not distracted, unless there is an emergency.
-
Use the stop buttons provided to let the bus driver know you need the next stop.
-
Always stand back behind the yellow lines at stations.
Tips
-
Always have your pass or payment ready for boarding. Without it, it is likely you will not be allowed to travel.
-
If you leave any items behind, contact the operator, and give the service number, time and direction of travel, with a description of what has been left.
-
Never walk in front or behind a bus as the driver has a restricted view and may not see you.
-
Explain that there might be different bus services using the same stop. They should signal for the coming bus to stop by putting a hand out.
-
Sometimes public transport can feel dirty. Maybe pack a small pocket size hand sanitiser to use if needed.
